False Messiah

Our story starts in a town touched by the gods. The fields burst with wheat. The rivers run pure. The wood grows strong. Every baby born is destined to live a long full life. There is no want in this town. No need for anything other than another sunrise to add another good memory to the land.
But this isn't a happy story.
One day the sun didn't rise. It was replaced by a black cloud that stayed for day after day. Soon the townsfolk became ill, one by one. Soon death was all they had to look forward to.
A final day for the townsfolk dawned, a light crested the horizon, it wasn't the sun, it was hope. A figure glowing with a brilliant light entered their slice of hell and bathed the whole town with light.
The figure was a man, proud and confidant, he wore robes of the purest white. His eyes the deepest blue. His hair the most golden blond. They flocked to him, pleading to be saved.
As he touched them, they fell back in sleep. A smile etched onto their faces. He did this to every man, woman and child. Until the whole town slept. But it was not asleep. The town was full of corpses never to decay, even the crows would stay away.
The figure walked on the path to the next town, as he drew away from the cloud, the souls of those he had put to sleep bounded out from the darkness. Following his heel like dogs follow a master.

Alternate ending that was fucking huge:

A second figure appears on the horizon as the day begins to close. He is garbed in an old robe that has been repaired many times, his white beard that flows out the hood is the only thing that can be seen of the man. He walks with a branch torn from a tree older than mankind.
He makes his way through the bodies and blesses them. Each body, man, woman and child, gets its own blessing. As he does so their souls are restored and the cloud begins to pass. As he restores the last of the townsfolk, the moon greets him.
He sighs his old sigh and continues on the path to the next town, ashamed of what he has done, of the demon he had given life.
